What is Yesterday's Price?

One puzzle a day, the same for everyone: an everyday American thing from a year gone by — a gallon of gas, a pound of coffee, a month of electricity. You get six guesses. Each one comes back warmer or colder, and landing within 5% of the real price counts as a win. Then you see how it stacks up against today, share your result, and come back tomorrow to keep your streak alive.

Where the numbers come from

Every price is real. Nothing is estimated or made up — each answer is the actual recorded average from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Average Price Data series, pulled through FRED, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' economic database. That's the whole charm: the “no way it was that cheap” moment is a fact, not a guess.
